New Public Television Special Facilitates National Pain Management Dialogue

The No. 1 reason for physician visits in the U.S. – with annual costs of up to $600 billion – pain often remains neglected and improperly managed

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jul. 29, 2014-- Everyone experiences pain at some point in their life. Pain is more prevalent than diabetes, cancer and heart disease combined, and yet it is frequently undiagnosed, untreated or undertreated.

A new public television special titled “Learning about Pain Management” will begin airing nationally this August on the Public Television Network as part of the Healthy Body, Healthy Mind (HBHM) series. HBHM, a production of the Information Television Network (ITV), is being supported in part by Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals without content control. The 30-minute program will take an in-depth look at the physical experience known as “pain,” including how the body senses it and is affected by it, as well as the many pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies aimed at managing it.

“A collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to pain management is critical, and this new ITV special, which touches upon biofeedback, physical rehabilitation, occupational therapy, medication and counseling, highlights the importance of this strategy,” said Joseph Pergolizzi, MD, Naples Anesthesia and Pain Associates Group in Naples, FL.

The new television program features leading experts in the pain management field from across the U.S.; they address topics ranging from the psychology of pain to rehabilitation and everything in between in order to provide viewers with a wealth of information about chronic and acute pain.

“Mallinckrodt is committed to providing comprehensive, effective treatments for patients who suffer from pain, and is equally committed to combating the misuse and abuse, by some, of pain medicines,” said Dr. Mario Saltarelli, Senior Vice President and Chief Science Officer at Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. “This ITV special underscores our commitment to education, collaboration and safety in this complex arena.”

The program also highlights the real-life experiences of a number of patients and their families to illuminate the impact of pain on people's lives.

Viewers can check their local PBS television listings to learn when the program will air in their area - or go to: http://www.itvisus.com/programs/hbhm.
